Dying Hollyhocks

Watercolor sketch of Hollyhock at end of season, Don West, Artist
10”x7”, sketched in a medium LEDA sketchbook with pencil, watercolor and gouache.

I noticed these end of season hollyhocks in the entry island to our subdivision a few weeks ago. I took a few reference photos while walking the dog. Everything looked dead or nearing it except the remaining blooms which had shriveled to a deep purple color. The faded green remains would soon be yellow and dry like the stems.

All the seasons provide subjects for daily sketching. Look for those things we pass by because they’re ugly or uninteresting. They make fine subjects for sketching and study.👍
